Initial situation
Air pollution in urban areas is a matter of concern and hence the Government of India, through the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), has formulated the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) and aims to reduce air pollution by 20-30% by 2024, taking the 2019-20 air quality as the baseline. Surat is also on the list compiled by the MoEFCC of cities where the pollution levels are not being met.
Surat is an important textile center in India, accounting for 40% of the country’s total textile production and 28% of the country’s total synthetic fiber production. The diverse activities of the textile sector generate textile waste, also known as chindi waste in Surat. This includes fabric waste, yarn/fibre waste, jari waste (metallized polyester yarn) and waste generated by other related activities. The proportion of textile waste in total solid municipal waste is very high compared to other Indian cities.
Destination
Development of technically and financially viable solutions, including a viable business model for the textile waste generated in the city of Surat. The solutions are intended to help reduce air pollution and improve waste management.
This includes identifying the sources of textile waste generation in Surat city, quantifying textile waste and developing technically and financially viable solutions for textile waste management, including segregation, treatment and reuse, recycling and disposal of textile waste.
