GIZ - Circular economy for Tunisian industry

Development and implementation of a training program on eco-design and product life cycle analysis for SMEs in Tunisia

Funding body: German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
Program: Croissance Qualitative pour l’Emploi (CQE)
Project executing agency: German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ)
Project partner: ENVERO GmbH
Country: Tunisia
Duration: December 2023 – July 2025

Initial situation

In a global context of major economic, environmental and climate challenges, Tunisian industry is striving to integrate itself with a sustainable development model and to develop a comprehensive and lasting solution. At the heart of this transition to a green industry is the circular economy (CE) as a key pillar of this change.

To facilitate the transition to a circular industrial model, there are several key areas for action. This includes measures for the circular economy in SMEs, including eco-design and the life cycle analysis (LCA) of products.

Destination

The aim of the project is to strengthen the competencies of public and private structures for the implementation of circular economy measures in SMEs, incorporating eco-design and product life cycle analyses (LCA). This is part (Output 2) of the “Croissance Qualitative pour l’Emploi (CQE)” programme, which aims to modernize Tunisian industry in terms of its sustainability, i.e. economically and ecologically.

The achievement of this output is measured by the number of innovation projects developed by SMEs in collaboration with a private or public service provider (indicator 2.1). And by the number of projects to expand the range of services offered by governmental and non-governmental service providers to promote innovation and environmental sustainability in the industrial sectors (indicator 2.2).

Procedure

  • Organization of the kick-off meeting in cooperation with the GIZ team.
  • Analysis and benchmarking of the potential and feasibility of circular economy topics based on practices, regulations and international rules.
  • Planning and implementation of two workshops to investigate the potential and feasibility of EC measures for Tunisian industrial companies.
  • Development of training modules that are optimally adapted to the Tunisian context.
  • Delivery of training for 20 people from both public and private support structures over a period of 6 days.
  • Coaching of the 20 people trained and support for 20 pilot companies in the areas of eco-design and life cycle analysis.
