Decentralized waste management in three selected cities in India

Funding body: Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV)
Program: “Reduction of Air Pollution in Three Indian Cities” (“Export Initiative Environmental Technologies” – EXI)
Project executing agency: German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ)
Project partners: Local partners in India
Country: India
Duration: November 2020 – March 2022

Initial situation

As part of the ongoing “Indo German Development Corporation”, the project supports the improvement of framework conditions and the development of markets for the introduction and sustainable use of innovative, integrated environmental and climate protection technologies and the development of innovative green infrastructure in selected partner countries, thereby contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Destination

The Reduction of Air Pollution in Surat, Pune & Nagpur project aims to strengthen the capacity of authorities in selected cities to more effectively implement the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) in India. Specifically, it involves identifying and evaluating the existing waste management system in the city for Surat, Nagpur and Pune and developing technically and economically viable waste processing solutions involving local waste companies for waste management solutions.

Procedure

  • Conduct a study in the three cities to gather information on the current state of waste management and assess the potential for introducing decentralized waste management systems to reduce air pollution.
  • Identification of suitable locations in the selected cities where practicable technical solutions for decentralized waste management and separation can be introduced to reduce air pollution.
  • Development of technically and financially viable solutions and sustainable business models for the implementation of decentralized waste management systems including waste separation, waste treatment and waste recycling in a selected area in each of the three selected cities.
  • Conduct consultation workshops/meetings with stakeholders to discuss and define the area/locality.
  • Support in the implementation of the tendering procedure, in particular in the identification and preparation of a list of potential bidders, the preparation of tender documents, the development of evaluation criteria, etc.
  • Advisory support in the implementation of the proposed solutions.
